Family reunification for foreign nationals
It allows foreign nationals residing in Spain to bring their family members to live with them lawfully. The requirements are more demanding than for EU citizens, but it is a perfectly viable route if the conditions are met.
Which family members
- Minor children or incapacitated persons.
- Spouse or partner.
- Ascendants: father or mother.
When
For the spouse or minor children, after residing in Spain for at least one year and already holding the first renewal of the residence authorisation, that is, a permit renewed for two years. For ascendants, long-term resident status is required: at least five years of lawful residence in Spain.
Financial means
A stable and sufficient income to cover your own needs and those of the family members to be reunited, according to the applicable legal threshold: one amount for reuniting with one family member, increased for each additional family member. The amounts change over time and should be checked in each case.
Documentation
Family tie
- Birth certificate, for children or to prove the relationship with parents.
- Up-to-date marriage certificate, for the spouse.
Financial means according to employment situation
- Self-employed: tax forms 130 or 131 for the last quarters and, where applicable, the income tax return.
- Employees: employment contract and the last six payslips.
- Not working: bank certificates, credit cards or proof of sufficient financial means.
Adequate housing
The authorities take into account everyone registered at the address when assessing the financial means available.
- Housing report issued by the town council.
- Rental contract, title deed or land registry extract (nota simple) for the home.
- Collective municipal registration certificate.
Healthcare and passports
- Healthcare cover, through the public system or private medical insurance.
- Full copy, in force, of the passports of the applicant and of the family members to be reunited.
