Study visa for higher and non-higher education applied for from outside Spain

For international students who are going to take official studies or non-university courses in Spain.

Study visa from outside Spain

It is applied for from the country of residence before travelling to Spain and is compulsory for official studies or non-university courses at authorised institutions.

Studies covered

  • Baccalaureate (upper secondary education).
  • Intermediate vocational training.
  • Artistic studies (music, dance, drama, etc.).
  • Sports studies.
  • Language teaching.
  • Post-compulsory secondary education.
  • Courses and programmes recognised by the education authorities.

Duration

It is granted for the length of the course, generally up to one year or for as long as the training lasts. Once in Spain, the Foreigner Identity Card (TIE) must be applied for.

Working while you study

It does not allow you to work automatically; in certain cases an authorisation compatible with your studies can be applied for if a job opportunity arises.

Family members

Family reunification is not provided for, although the visa is a way to begin a lawful stay in Spain and to progress towards future residence authorisations.
