Student extensions

For foreign students who continue their training in Spain and need to renew their study stay.

Extension of a study stay

It allows you to keep living in Spain lawfully while you finish a course or start a new programme, without interrupting your administrative status.

What it involves

It is the renewal of the study stay authorisation for as long as the studies last, provided the requirements of immigration law continue to be met.

Requirements

  1. Proof of continuing studies or of enrolment on a new study programme.
  2. Having passed or made proper progress in the previous course.
  3. Sufficient financial means for the period of stay.
  4. Public or private medical insurance without co-payments.
  5. No criminal record in Spain.

Deadlines

  • From 60 days before the permit's expiry date.
  • Up to 90 days after it expires, although in that case an administrative penalty may apply.

Documentation

  1. Completed official application form.
  2. Full copy of the passport in force.
  3. Previous Foreigner Identity Card (TIE).
  4. Proof of enrolment or of continuing studies.
  5. Proof of sufficient financial means.
  6. Medical insurance in force.
  7. Academic certificate of progress in the previous course.

Work authorisation

If a work authorisation already exists, it continues on the same terms during the extension; if not, one can be applied for provided the activity is compatible with the studies.

Duration

It depends on the type of studies: generally one year, or the length of the study programme if shorter.

Important considerations

  • Genuine academic progress must be demonstrated.
  • Changes of studies must be consistent with your training path.
  • Foreign documentation must be translated and legalised or apostilled where applicable.
