Return authorisation

For those whose permit is being renewed or modified and who need to leave Spain and come back.

Return authorisation

A document that allows you to leave Spain and re-enter without losing your lawful status while your residence, work or stay permit is being renewed or modified. It is particularly useful when the permit has expired but the renewal application has already been filed and is awaiting a decision.

Working while you wait

Yes. With the application in progress your situation in Spain remains lawful: you can keep working and keep your rights even though the card has expired and there is no reply yet.

Travelling outside Spain

Travelling abroad is also possible, including to your country of origin; to return to Spain without problems you must first apply for the return authorisation.

What it is for

It allows you to cross borders and re-enter Spain by proving that the permit is being renewed or modified, avoiding problems at immigration control.

Where and when to apply

At the Immigration Office or the police station of your place of residence, in advance: normally around ten days before the planned travel date.

Documentation

  1. Passport in force.
  2. Foreigner identity card (NIE), even if it has expired.
  3. Proof of the application for renewal or modification of the permit.
