Brexit

Since 1 January 2021 British citizens need a residence permit to come to Spain, obtained at the Spanish embassy or consulate in the country of origin or residence of the person who wants to live, reunite with family or study in Spain. Visas are residence permits obtained in that consular district, normally where the permit must be applied for the first time; in some countries a visa is needed even for a visit. For British citizens, barring future exemptions, a tourist visa is required.

It is used by nationals of countries that need a visa to enter Spain (Bolivia, Ecuador, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Senegal, Morocco, China or Russia, for example); it is granted for a maximum of 90 days to travel throughout the Schengen area, whether for tourism or to enter Spain or the European Union. Other countries, such as the United States, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Canada or Australia, do not need one.

  • Sufficient financial means for the length of the trip: a minimum per day of stay, according to the applicable legal threshold.
  • Return ticket.
  • Travel itinerary and accommodation for every day of the stay: a hotel, Airbnb or similar booking or, when visiting a family member (which also reduces the amounts required), a letter of invitation.
  • Travel medical insurance.

British citizens who want to reside in Spain from 1 January 2021 must apply for a visa or residence permit under immigration law, like citizens of third countries. The new instruction allows those who can show they were residing in Spain before 31/12/2020 to apply for the residence permit very simply at the Immigration Office: it is enough to prove that residence with documentation that verifies it.
